As a victim of sexual assault you have the power to choose the course of action that is right for you. You may choose to report the crime to law enforcement and the crime will be investigated or you may choose not to report. Either way, you have a right to receive a forensic medical exam at no cost to you.
A FME is an examination used to collect evidence and DNA to aid in the prosecution of your case should it go to trial. A FME can be performed up to 240 hours (10 days) after the assault and possibly longer. The SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) may also dispense prophylactic medication for those at risk of sexually transmitted infections and address pregnancy concerns as a result of the assault.
As a victim of sexual assault the Georgia Crime Victims Bill of Rights serves to protect victims, keep them informed of the legal process and provides service for crime victims. GEORGIA CRIME VICTIMS’ BILL OF RIGHTSYou may be eligible to participate in the Georgia Crime Victims Compensation Program which eases the financial burden faced by victims of violent crimes by covering expenses related to medical bills, funeral expenses, mental health counseling and crime scene sanitization, as well as loss of income or support.
